Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage is a sacred healing practice performed with the client draped in a sarong or loin cloth. The practitioner uses long flowing strokes to massage the length of the client's body from head to toe in oil (usually coconut). Although awareness stays in the hands, the forearms are often incorporated into the rythmic movements to give a deep pressure. The intention of Kahuna Lomi is to strengthen the flow of mana (life energy) for the client, and to infuse them with the spirit of Aloha (kindness, acceptance and joy). The ceremonial atmosphere of the treatment creates a powerful healing response allowing us to connect with our bodies, release tension and work with deep held emotions. It is a blissful, beautiful treatment hard to describe in words.
Course Content - What you
will learn
We will spend time exploring the Hawaiian model of shamanic healing and bodywork, with an introduction to Huna (the esoteric philosophy of Hawaii).
including traditional chants, simple Hula dance movements and the exchange and symbolism of Lai flower garlands. There will be opportunities for reflection and meditation, and students are invited to make connections with thier own path of personal growth.
The practical techniques of Lomi Lomi massage involve the use of the forearms, awareness and an intention of Aloha, incorporating Hula style movement. Students will be taught on couches in a clinical setting taking it in turns to observe, practice and receive the massage. Traditional Lomi Lomi massage is performed with the client fully undressed, however we have adapted this to better suit attitudes towards nudity in the west, so during the course recipients will be draped for modesty in a sarong or loincloth. There will be an accompanying booklet with written descriptions of the individual movements, photographs and space for students to make notes.
You will learn and be assessed on the following points:
be able to describe the 7 principles of Huna Wisdom
explain the meaning and intention of Aloha and how this relates to massage
perform an effective Hawaiian massage using authentic techniques in a professional manner
demonstrate safe posture and bodyuse whilst giving the massage
give an appropriate consultation and client care for people receiving the therapy
