Shiatsu is a method of bodywork formulated in Japan in 20th century as a development of various older forms of Chinese bodywork which are still practised in China and elsewhere today.
Shi means “finger” and Atsu means “pressure”.
There were many hands-on therapies called Teate before traditional Chinese therapies such as Acupuncture and Tuina (called Anma in Japan) were introduced to Japan around 1000AD. The practice of this massage was a semi-mystical activity performed by women and the blind.
Shiatsu is a form of therapeutic bodywork, that is relaxing, restorative and beneficial to health. As acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, these type of bodywork method abides to the principles of traditional oriental medicine, which originated in ancient China.
Shiatsu is a holistic therapy, based on the idea that vital energy, known as Ki or qi, flows through channels (or meridians) in the body. These can be influenced by applying perpendicular pressure to specific points along the channel and thereby promoting healthier functioning of specific body system and of the body as a whole. The therapy is mainly used to regulate the body balance and to prevent illness. But shiatsu therapy can also be used to address specific health problems by focusing the treatment on certain points or areas.
Shiatsu uses stretching, manipulations, rotations and pressure on the whole body and specifically on acupoints and meridians. Shiatsu technique refers to the use of fingers and palm of one's hand to apply a specific type of pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body for the purpose of correcting the imbalances of the body, and for maintaining and promoting health. It is also a method contributing to the healing of specific illnesses.
